Trump / Trade War / Update / Watch

… see previous issues for items between Feb 20 and May 12th

+ May 14 – U.S. to slap Canadian fresh mushroom imports with duties, claiming Canadian producers are unfairly subsidized …

+ June 2 – Canada proposing to renew CUSMA/USMCA treaty for 16 years prior to July 1st deadline as opposed to renegotiating the treaty or ending it – while the U.S. is holding to its position of renegotiating some issues … so, the countdown until July 1st will be carefully watched with implications for Canadians and Canadian businesses – and American companies too, as tariffs, auto industry and resource sectors will be impacted in significant ways depending on the outcome of negotiations between Canada, the United States and Mexico

+ June 2 – Trump signed a proclamation reducing tariffs on some steel, aluminum products and some farm machinery, heating and HVAC equipment and other confusing language …

+ June 3 – Trump announced plans/threat to impose new tariffs on dozens of countries, including Canada, yet appears to have an exemption/carve-out for Canada because of USMCA – and renewed allegations of ‘forced labour’ being his rationale for his tariffs…

+ June 19 – Canada slapped a 10% tariff on canned vegetable imports

+ July 2 – Trump declined to  renew the CUSMA trade agreement; triggering a 10 X 1 yr at a time renegotiation process …

July 20 – new 50% tariff’s threatened to be levied by Trump against Canadian products in 30 days – and the list of issues/products are diverse to the point of being absurd

July 21 – Carney says he and Trump agreed to ‘intensify’ trade talks; also, he issued a statement on the impropriety of these tariffs under CUSMA

July 28 – Trump says he doesn’t care about CUSMA or having a free trade deal with Canada and Mexico – claims the U.S. doesn’t need either Country, but that they need the U.S. … without mentioning that the currently in force treaty has 10 more years to go …

July 5 – Carney ups the tough talk on looming deadlines, negotiations

July 11 – trade officials … potential deal to pitch to Trump next week ahead of deadline

Aug. 10 – CABC New Economic Report on impacts of US-Canada Tariff escalation and USMCA

Aug. 11 – CUSMA breakdown, job losses and massive economic impact feared

Aug. 12 – CFIB concerns, new US tariff on CUSMA compliant goods would have a massive impact

Aug. 12 – GoC weighing a proposal on auto tariffs

Aug. 12 – interim deal pursued, Mexico could come later

Aug. 18 – prior to the Aug. 19 deadline Trump imposed, he ‘paused’ his questionable tariffs for 3 days based on a ‘deal pending’ but Carney was less enthusiastic saying ‘much work yet to do’; meanwhile, there is reporting that the ‘first ever use of a 1930 law Trump is relying on’ would likely fail to pass the test if challenged in the courts, but then the damage will have been done … to, too soon to tell, but tensions seem to have eased … a bit; great article by Jack Mintz, seems it’s high-stakes poker where everybody loses
